2018 is here. A new year is a wonderful opportunity to start fresh and set new personal goals. This year, we did the hard work for you and listed four attainable New Year’s resolutions we know you can achieve this year.
For the newly diagnosed person with Parkinson’s
- Learn. Absorb all the information you can about early-stage Parkinson’s disease (PD). Start with our free educational books or website.
- Establish an exercise routine. Regular exercise (such as yoga, walking or swimming) can help improve flexibility and mobility and reduce muscle and joint pain.
- Get the support your need. Support should play a role in your care plan. It’s never too early to find a support group that works for you. Call our Helpline 1-800-4PD-INFO (473-4636) to find your nearest one.
- Find the right doctor. Seek out a movement disorders specialist. He or she can become a key player on your healthcare team, helping you best manage your symptoms from the beginning.
For the person living with Parkinson’s
- Become a Parkinson’s Advocate. Help us advocate for Parkinson’s research and always advocate for yourself by utilizing resources that can help you stay healthy, like our Aware in Care kit.
- Build your care team. If there is a PD symptom that is new or interfering with your life, build your care team and find a physical therapist, nutritionist or other specialist familiar with PD.
- Explore complementary therapy. In addition to medication, introduce new approaches to managing PD symptoms — from massage therapy to art therapy or A complementary therapy in which a trained practitioner inserts small needles into the skin; has been proven to relieve pain..
- Fill up your social calendar. Call our Helpline to find a support or exercise group in your area.
For the caregiver of someone with Parkinson’s
- Find your Zen. Self-care is an essential part of your PD journey. In 2018, find your preferred method of relaxation — a hot bath, A mental practice designed to enhance relaxation, gain insight and control over emotional and physical responses to daily experiences and improve compassion as well as mental or physical performance. Used as a complementary therapy to improve sleep, mental function and overall quality of life and decrease depression, anxiety, fatigue and pain., reading a new book. Then devote time to it every day.
- Plan for the future. The best time to plan your advanced directives is when you are both healthy. This year, get your plans in order.
- Accept your feelings. Guilt, anger and A mood disorder whose symptoms can include a persistent sad or empty mood, feelings of hopelessness or pessimism, irritability and loss of interest or pleasure in previously enjoyable activities. are normal reactions to a progressive disease. The challenge lies in accepting these feelings. Knowing what to expect emotionally can help.
- Ask for help. Make this the year you don’t take everything on yourself. Free up a few hours each week by asking friends and family to help. Also try new caregiver resources.
